How one alumnus connects his passions and commitment to Binghamton

Roger Mills GilbertRoger Mills Gilbert ’76 dreamed of a career in broadcasting but also found the world of medicine endlessly fascinating. So, he majored in biological sciences at Binghamton University while also taking to the airwaves as news director on WHRW-FM and as host of the campus TV game show Dorm Challenge.

As a radiation oncologist, he cared for patients during some of the most difficult times of their lives. Now that he’s retired, he’s still helping people, including through a bequest in his will to continue his support of the broadcast studio he established in 2019. The studio, in the Lecture Hall, can broadcast live, high-definition video and audio to media outlets worldwide, giving faculty a platform to contribute to the national conversation on important issues of the day.

“I find it very meaningful to maintain a connection with the earlier parts of my life,” says Gilbert, whose gifts to support Binghamton span 35 years and counting. “Giving back to Binghamton reinforces this connection while doing something that I hope is worthwhile for others.”
